The Gift of Friendship: Stories That Celebrate the Beauty of Shared Moments by Dawn Camp

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a cute collection of brief stories about friendship. It’s short, easy to read, easy to pick up and set aside when you are interrupted. It’s a great gift for that close friend. Camp isn’t the author but she did a fine job collecting and editing the book. While I am not so sure I’d purchase it myself, I would pick it up while waiting somewhere or to thumb through when I didn’t want to get into a book only to have to set it down again. I can think of a few friends I’d give this to as a gift. Overall it’s a nice collection in a physical format of things you can find on a blog in a nice compact book. I received an ARC through Revell Reads in exchange for an honest review.

You Can’t Text a Tough Conversation by Mike Bechtle

If you take ten minutes away from your phones and tablets and just watch people in a crowded location you’ll notice that 90% of them are staring at their phone or tablet instead of talking with the person they are with. We leave our phones on the counter when we sit down for dinner. I insist that when we travel that physical books are in the car. This book has a wealth of information and ideas for when you sit down, face to face. It’s not going to be easy, but you really can’t do it with text. I found the book to be easy to understand and I agreed with the majority if not all of the content. I received an ARC through Revell Publishers in exchange for an honest review. The Horse of My Heart: Stories of the Horses We Love by Callie Smith Grant

The Horse of My Heart: Stories of the Horses We LoveThe Horse of My Heart: Stories of the Horses We Love by Callie Smith Grant
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

You are hereby warned to have tissues available when you sit down to read this book. I’ve loved horses since before I could walk. I’ve worked with problem horses, trained green horses, retired elderly horses and loved each and every one of them. Each story gripped my heart with the tale. This is a book I will read again and will share with everyone I know that loves horses. My mother had a horse that showed up at the right time and helped her deal with Epilepsy and became a huge part of her healing. I had a horse that bonded with me, heart to heart. We even slept together in the stall when strangles when through the barn. He was my soul mate and I miss him terribly. Anyway, back to this book! It’s well worth the five stars. If you get a chance to read it, do so. You’ll feel a type of inner healing as you read the stories. It’s a wonderful book to have and to share. 10 Things Great Dads Do by Rick Johnson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

With all of the self-help books available it can be difficult to narrow down the choices and to find one that is actually helpful. I’m not a dad but I am very lucky to have a dad who is wonderful, wise, generous and kind. Parts of this book felt like Johnson was talking about my dad. Perhaps that lended a bit of bias in enjoying the read so much. I found the book easy to understand and full of valuable information that a dad could use to become more than just the father. Kids today need a great role model in their dad. I’m so happy that this book contains all the right elements. I received an ARC through Revell Publishing in exchange for and honest review. The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom

So much is lost over the years and even more is cut from what schools teach our children compared to what we were taught or our parents or grandparents. Why cut out teaching the holocaust? This is a very well compiled rendition of what Corrie and her family endured and how the strength of their faith kept them going no matter the odds. I feel this story, and a few others, need to be told and taught to each generation. I received an ARC through Chosen books in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.

The Paranormal Conspiracy: The Truth about Ghosts, Aliens, Mysterious Beings and the Deepest Longings of Your Soul by Timothy J. Dailey

The Paranormal Conspiracy: The Truth about Ghosts, Aliens, Mysterious Beings and the Deepest Longings of Your SoulThe Paranormal Conspiracy: The Truth about Ghosts, Aliens, Mysterious Beings and the Deepest Longings of Your Soul by Timothy J. Dailey
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I was raised in a Christian family and I have strong Christian values and morals. I also believe in Ghosts and have had personal paranormal experiences. This is primarily why I was eager to read this book. Sadly all this book has is claims about a dark conspiracy against Christians masquerading as the paranormal. The blurb is not accurate for what is inside the cover. I seriously believe this is aimed at making money by grabbing the attention of those of us who enjoy watching shows with zombies, vampires, UFO’s and ghosts. The blurb is enough to get sales to even non-Christians with mild curiosity. In my opinion Dailey is just out to chase the golden buck with a bit of research and a far fetched opinion. It’s not even pop-culture content. Label this one as false advertising and use it as a prop to keep the kitchen table from rocking. Exploring Christian Theology: Creation, Fall, and Salvation by Michael J. Svigel

Exploring Christian Theology: Creation, Fall, and SalvationExploring Christian Theology: Creation, Fall, and Salvation by Michael J. Svigel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The title should tell you just what is inside. The information is logically presented and organized with quite a few tidbits I didn’t know. I feel it can be read and studied regardless of which flavor of Christian you might be and that it has something for everyone. It’s not a read in one sitting type book nor is it a read and put away type book. It’s meant to be digested in your own pace and referred to on a regular basis. Overall this is a very informative book well worth keeping around. I received an ARC through Bethany House Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.

For self-help books this one is presented and written much better. It follows a logical direction and layout with valid points. Each point is explained and detailed nicely. Even the areas that didn’t apply to me felt well written. While I’m not a fan of these sorts of books I feel this one is done well enough that I can easily recommend it to all readers. There’s something in this one for everyone. I do feel it got a bit lengthy at times but not overly so. Overall this is a solid self-help book I feel will be checked out by many of my patrons. Some lessons are more difficult than others. Sometimes we need just a little push in the right direction and sometimes those little pushes come in the form of animals. Who would have thought that a donkey would be the little push for this family, much less any family. The tale is adorable and filled with practical and valuable life lessons. I love how personal the book is and how easy it is to read. This is a great story and tool for all stages of life and all ages. I received and ARC in exchange for an honest review.
